Industrial management

sitting
11 weeks seems like a good interval for a quick update. Well, I've just been too lazy to update before, anyway. Doing an update in the middle of a lecture in industrial management basics just seems the perfect time, no? The subject is interesting and all, but oh-so-general. Guess it's in the category of stuff you need to know to be an engineer once again. No more using all-round education as an excuse, that is. Just a more refined form of it, course.

Oh boy, the people in the row behind me really are keeping in the subject. Just talking about whatever comes to their heads. I wish they'd do the talking somewhere else. I'm only bothering people by typing this entry and the keyboard sound is fairly tolerable, anyway.

Recent news bring fun stuff to Finland. Some wonderful laws including one where schools, libraries etc. and businesses are getting the possibility to monitor all network actions. Whee, people spying on everything you do on the net isn't really my idea of a good law. Especially when they get more freedom than the police have ever had on the subject. We'll see how this goes on... Lex Nokia, one of the awesome decisions made by the parliament.

Okay, back to the lecture. Cost accounting, lovely...

Probability maths, oh noes...

Yay, I only seem to update when I'm at school. No wonder when I have to sit through lectures like my current one. I just finished writing a report for the use of data structures and now I'm writing an entry (and browsing Facebook at the same time, real multitasking). I hate having to do this course, but it's compulsory. I really don't remember anything about integrals anymore and I'm supposed to be doing them in the exam. Meh, as long as I pass this course, it's fine. Probability maths never was too fun...

Christmas is coming, only 1 more day of school after today and then it's 2,5 weeks of holidays. I think I'll do all of the school stuff tomorrow, so I won't even have to think about school. It's been ages since I last had free time to play games and such... If you don't count the Flash games I've spent way too much time playing lately. Kongregate is a fun place, the badges and challenges are so addicting. Yay for that. Now, back to the maths lecture... Ah, who am I kidding... *goes to play some fun Flash games*

First week of the period

dull
Time to do some homework for a change. Introduction to databases with way too many questions. I guess they've reserved like 3 hours for the homework in the course plan. Not fun at all, unless I manage to do all the stuff in way less time. At least it's not all too difficult. Stuff I really should know in the future, I suppose...

Should complete 4 different school assignments by the end of next week. Not fun.

The wonders of hypermedia

It's such a great feeling on lectures when you realize something you haven't thought of before. Kinda like combining all those bits and pieces into a whole. Almost all of the hypermedia lectures have been either full of this or just plain simple stuff. I'm really beginning to wonder should I choose hypermedia over software development. They fit well together, though... Ah well, like two more years to consider all the possible combinations.

I had to smile several times on the lecture as the lecturer kept mentioning LJ as an example over and over again.

EDIT: Whoa, I'm actually being active... Don't really know how long this will last... Guess I'm wasting "precious" lecture time. :D

A new week

happy
Monday again, lucky I don't hate it that much. I'm sitting at school in Tietotalo lobby, waiting for my programming partner to show up. Course I'm here way ahead of my schedule, but that's just how I like it. Early bird and whatnot... The weekend went mostly doing the assignment, but it was great fun and I learned a lot. There's still stuff to do, but my enthusiasm shows that this really seems to be what I want to do in the future. Good to know that I haven't wasted over a year of my life so far.

Charlie Chaplin's The Dictator was on TV during the weekend, too. A great and very funny movie. I kept wondering how they did all the effects in the 40s, guess they had enough money and imagination to do what they wanted.

Hm... Typing on this Eee PC has become easier, but I still keep mistyping a couple of letters. Guess that's the price you pay for a small (80% of normal) keyboard and a tiny laptop. The battery on this thing is just amazing and surely was one of the reasons why I picked this little baby over others. 8 hours of use time is something I love big time...

Anyway, got to get to the programming assignment. Yay for Shogi (that's what we're trying to do with C++).

Blogging, yeah right...

Great, blogging on a lecture about blogging. Love my Wednesdays, 8 hours of lectures. After 6 hours it's just a drain through my head, no way of remembering anything. Course the more difficult subject are near the end of the day. No worries, still have somewhat over a week to get everything straight. Then it's 4 days and 7 exams, woohoo! Seriously speaking, a lot of work still to be done. Lovely nearly 60 page document on developing the systems for an intelligent home, lots of different programming stuff and Wiki pages on community web sites (will do LJ on the last one, course)... Maybe I really should be paying more attention on this lecture, but it's just about RSS and such... General stuff and easy, too. The topic in general is very interesting as well, but not really challenging enough. Hope the later courses will offer some more challenges.

Well, I finally did write an entry in here as well. It's getting really miraculous how I keep promising myself I'll update and still never do. Guess there's just more important things... Or not... Blah, I'm just lazy. Now, back to the lecture.

Time to start anew!

It's been bloody ages since I last wrote in here, so I figured it was time to do so... And besides I happened to have the time between lectures. Just hate it when the ones from 14 to 16 get canceled and you still have stuff 16-18. Especially when it's stuff you can't learn from the slides yourself. Enough with the ranting already. I also figured it was a time for a fresh start so all my previous entries are now private stuff. Didn't just want to delete them, lotsa memories in there after all. To tell the truth, I've been working with LJ translation stuff all along but just haven't got the pull to make a post. Why? I dunno, just haven't felt like it.

So, what have I been doing all this time? Took a year in the army, that's what I've been up to mostly. Wasn't my choice to stay for a year but it ended up being like that. Not like we had a choice, but guess I don't really regret it all that much. All the stuff they say about army making you a man is just total crap, that's for sure. Freezing your ass off sitting in the middle of a forest pretending you're actually guarding stuff isn't really my idea of education. Sure it'd be all different were it war for real, but that's not a very likely situation, is it? Most of my days I spent tampering with these communications devices predating the PC era (or very early parts anyway). It's fun when machines over 20 years old stop working in the middle of everything... What great confidence I now have for using the stuff come war... I'm really glad to say the year's over and I never have to think about it again. Unless they call me for a refresher, that is... In all, it really wasn't that useful and if you got the right attitude it was even distantly fun (I can't believe I'm saying that...).

The missed year being covered, I'm now back at university. Studying really is my thing or at least a lot more my thing than the army. Lots of stuff to do for starters. I suppose it's better to start the year with a hurry than to end it with one. I'm sorta deciding to study hypermedia and software engineering, so far so good considering my interest levels. Some of the stuff in basic classes is just amazingly simple, but can't complain about that too much. Easy is good to me. Now then, got to get ready for the next lecture. Telecommunications basics, fun stuff... Just a huge amount of abbreviations. Seems like engineers have a thing for them... I didn't even realize OMG means Object Management Group as well...
